Have you seen the recent advertisements for satellite radio? Commercials for XM Radio feature Elton
John - Sirius will no doubt launch campaigns with their featured star. It all looks like fun, but is satellite
radio really worth it?
As with any new product,
Satellite radio offers both good aspects and things to consider. Before you make a decision, take a look
at the following factors:
Pros
Cons
Satellite radio offers a
huge, diverse programming.
You must have a satellite
receiver to enjoy satellite radio and enroll in a subscription plan.
Most programs are
broadcast commercial free.
There
is a brief (5 second) delay from the broadcast to the receipt of the signal.
Quality is unmatched by
standard radio - considered 'CD quality radio'.
May experience brief
'drop-outs' in signals in areas with large buildings or heavily wooded.
You can still request
favorite songs, through telephone or email requests.
Systems are not
interchangeable - you cannot use Sirius products with XM, very specific
to each service provider.
Eliminates the need to
carry CDs or download music from the internet.
Initial purchase costs of
systems are fairly high. Expect
to spend at least $100 to purchase receiver, more if you are getting a
portable system.
You decide what you want
to listen to, when you want to listen to it.
You may not hear an entire
program. Some talk radio
is being aired in a smaller time slot than the original, so a three-hour show
has been cut down to two hours to accommodate the available slot on satellite
radio.
With
a portable unit and a base unit you can easily take your music with you from
car to work to home.
Satellite radio isn't
perfect - there are always some small issues that will be addressed as the
industry matures. In the meantime,
you can still get an amazing quality radio experience with few or no
commercials. The programming
options are excellent. Satellite
Radio is a must for music aficionados.
