The DISH Network is the primary competitor of
DirecTV in the United States for the direct broadcast satellite (DBS)
services. DISH Network began
in March of 1996 and is currently owned by Echostar. DISH Network's customer base has grown exponentially. They started with 20,000 customers and
as of 2004, their customer base exceeded 10 million subscribers.
DISH Network began services by using an 18-inch
satellite dish - but currently uses a 20-inch satellite dish called DISH
500. The DISH 500 allows subscribers to receive two separate satellite signals from two different
satellites. Using multiple satellites is an important option as it allows satellite TV companies to
increase their programming options to the consumer.
Dish Network is an important competitor in the audio programming category. In
2004, DISH Network began offering music channels from the SIRIUS satellite
radio package to their audio-only channels. SIRIUS satellite radio is the premiere satellite radio
service. They are aggressively
pursuing a variety of programming options and made news in 2004 with their
contract negotations with shock jock Howard Stern. In 2006, Stern will be joining the SIRIUS family.
DISH Network offers consumers a variety of options
including broadband internet, available through it's partner Starband. DISH Network proactively pursues
staying on top of the technological heap and regularily broadcasts an audio
show to keep users informed of technology changes and advances.
DISH Network is a solid and growing performer in the DBS market. In 2003, EchoStar, the owner of DISH Network, made an attempt
to merge with DirecTV. The merger
fell through due to possible monopoly restrictions. As a result, there are two extremely competitive and
aggressive companies vying for consumers attention and loyalty.
